So, you’ve gone into business and after a lot of hard work you’ve established a ‘name and reputation’ in the local community. It takes time to do that, and at some point, you’ll reach that exciting milestone in the life of a business and start to employ people. Most business owners recognise the value of dedicated and competent staff, and are prepared to invest time and money in developing their skills. After all, they see them as valuable team members. On the other hand, some business owners don’t value their contribution to the business and see them only as an extra set of hands.
Make no mistake, every person that works in a business from the junior clerk to the CEO contributes to building the brand. It’s at this point that I’m reminded of a famous quote from Richard Branson where he advises businesses to “train people well enough so they can leave, but treat them well so they don’t want to”. Strong and respected brands are built on the efforts of all staff in building the distinctive customer experience that is felt by every person engaging with the business. Where staff deliver a poor customer experience, and show little interest in their work, that cloud of negativity sits over the business like a heavy fog. As sure as the sun rises in the morning, that negativity clings to the brand and starts to define it. That is why so many companies put candidates through exhaustive recruitment processes to make sure they are the “right fit” for the company and will help develop the brand. Invest in your people.
