Exploring Social Media Buy In By Small Business Owners!

Have you ever heard the saying that business owners need to spend more time working ‘on’ their business rather than ‘in’ it?  I’ll go out on a limb here and speculate that every small business owner has either heard it said to others, or been hit with it during some business development seminar.

With the vast majority of small businesses being single operators or under 5 employees, it stands to reason (reality check) that working ‘in’ the business is something that can’t be avoided.  It’s just becomes a matter of balance.
Common sense tells us there are limited hours in a day available for work, so to shift some time into working ‘on’ the business, some of the day to day activities need to be delegated to someone else.  Small business owners ARE time poor.  It just seems to come with the territory.  When time is short, there are certain tasks that seem to get sacrificed in the tradeoff.  Marketing is one of those areas.  Likewise, when time is short, there are a few things that keep getting put off and placed in the “we’ll get to it one day” basket.  Social Media and Digital Marketing for business often have pride of place in that deep basket.

But, if you step back and reflect, it becomes apparent that it’s a counterproductive strategy.  There are a few concepts that small business owners talk a lot about when planning the growth of their business.  Innovation, efficiency, productivity, and cost vs benefit are key considerations.  Today, Social Media and Digital Marketing are key parts to success in those areas, and they are too important to ignore.  Likewise, they just shouldn’t remain in ‘The Basket’!

Now, I’m not here to lecture business owners on how to fill their day.  However, if your daily schedule just won’t allow you to pull the Social Media and Digital Marketing folder out of the ‘The Basket’, then engage a professional to manage it for you.  It’s a cost-effective option where the results are clear and measurable, and should aim to achieve your objective whether it be brand building, growing your database, or making sales.  In doing so, you will be taking active steps to reducing ‘The Basket’ from a wheelie bin size to a shoebox!

Present Professionally helps time poor small business owners engage effectively with their customers through professional and engaging content, and advice on how to present their business to maximise these opportunities.
