If you framed your opinions about Australian politicians simply on the published thoughts of the national media, then you would probably answer NO to the question I posed. The ‘gotcha moment’ has become a staple of the news media, where any error no matter how benign causes the poor old politician much embarrassment and ridicule. However, on a recent trip to Canberra, I saw plenty of examples that would lead most people to question that premise. Whilst visiting a childhood friend who is now a Federal MP, I had the opportunity to watch the debate in the House of Representatives and speak with a range of people from my old friend to political staff and general employees. If I could wrap up the feel or vibe of the place I would use the word ‘passion’. Whilst that might cause a few of you to roll around in fits of laughter, I have to say that I couldn’t go past that word.
Irrespective of the topic or type of conversation, each person exhibited (in their demeanour, conversation and presentation) a passion for what they did. There was this pervading belief they were contributing to the greater good and our democracy. Even the old guy who wouldn’t allow me into the House of Representatives Chamber without a tie was defending the tradition and order of the place. So, if we bring that back to our usual topic of small business, the word ‘passion’ fits nicely into any discussion about business success and growth. Exhibit passion every day you open for business, and in every conversation with potential customers, and even how you present yourself behind the desk or counter. If you do so, then maybe you might have learnt something from our friends in Canberra. Just remember one thing. If you decide to check it out yourself, just remember to pack a spare tie!
